When it came to the death penalty it only affected my principles in the sense of innocent people being convicted. If someone did not do a crime he is being charged with and is sentenced to the death penalty, then I have a problem with the punishment. But if the person charged is guilty and there is undeniable proof then the death penalty is justified in my eyes. There also has to be a set list of criteria for someone to be even considered for this punishment because it is a very big matter. In terms of skills or knowledge that could make me a more effective ethical being, just reading on the subject and making yourself familiar with it can help you with that.

I think people should be able to do what they want as long as they aren’t affecting other’s lives. That is why abortion does not really affect my principles.  While others might see it as a horrible thing due to religion or personal beliefs, I believe that we should be allowed to do what we please in this country as long as it’s legal. If abortion is allowed than let it be. The philosopher that I found was less consistent with my own beliefs is Noonans. He thinks that abortion should not be allowed, which I disagree with. I think that any sort of opinion on this issue should come from a woman’s perspective and if not it is irrelevant because men have no idea how it is to be in that position.

The first contemporary issue didn’t really affect my principles directly because a clone is still a person therefore I would still treat it the same as anyone else. The thing is that it might go against what people would say is god’s will and that would seem problematic for them, but in my view it isn’t bad because if it wasn’t supposed to happen then we wouldn’t be able to. I don’t see it morally or ethically wrong to clone people unless it is used in a negative way, such as to make an army or for spare parts for “original copy” humans. The philosopher that i found to be most consistent with my own principles is Tooley. He talked about the benefits and thinks It should be done; the good is greater than the bad in his eyes and if we have the right people doing it I think that it could be good.

The social and moral principles that I find compelling is Locke's libertarian view. His idea of natural rights and liberty is what our own constitution is based on which shows its acceptance in history. These principles fit in rather well with how I live my life and how I interact with others. I do what I want with what I have as long as it does not affect the life or well-being of others. Locke proposes the idea of property being what frees you from being a slave to any group or monarchy. because no one can tell you what to do with what you own. and that is very prevalent in my life and our society as a whole.I think they do not conflict at all instead they go hand in hand, and fit together well.

Reflective Blog 2

The principles I adhered to before entering this class consisted of things along the lines of giving people the benefit of the doubt, and treat people how I want to be treated. I believe that everyone has some sort of good in them, and to be able to see it in people is what I try to do.  My principles were not taught to me, but when I look at myself I see things that I have done that are not the best in terms of morality, so when I see someone else I don’t judge them but  try to understand them and relate myself to what kind of person they are. The readings in class that most stood out to me were the ones by Sartre. The idea that we exist before we find a purpose for ourselves is something really interesting to read about. Every action every human commits to is actively shaping what it means to be human, in this belief and it gives you a sort of moral responsibility to do what you think is right, not just for yourself but for everyone as a whole.
